City Stars

The city lights looked so bright from the country.

They taunted me like candy,

And stood watch over my thoughts like a sentry.

But now my thoughts are twisting.  I’m acting like someone who has too much brandy:

I am alone, cold, distraught.

The lights blind me,

The air has me caught.

And my knee

Meets the hard cement.

I never wanted this.

And now I resent

My decision.

I’ve realized that these city stars

Are just bulbs that burn out.
